A long-running observation program can outlast the people who commissioned its first instruments. Use stable instrument identities, recognizable sites, and clear channel aliases to reduce the amount of knowledge that only exists in a handover conversation.

Record locations and logger relationships alongside the instrument's variables. Keep units and expected cadence explicit. These details help a new reviewer establish what a channel represents and how it was intended to arrive before drawing conclusions from a trend.

Keep the method close to the result.

Store raw channels and calculated variables as distinct parts of the instrument record. Define equations with identified inputs and calibration constants, so a reviewer can connect a displayed engineering value to the computation behind it.

Where the intended method changes from a known time, use calculation periods and verify the affected history. Historical recalculation has a visible status; previous current values may remain visible until the new result is ready.
