Projects and sites

Use a project for a monitoring job and sites for its locations. Site boundaries can also help you give a team access to the instruments it needs.

Configure a project

1. Open the organization’s project list and select or create the project.
2. Open Project settings → Overview to review its name and default site.
3. Set the organization’s default project if this is the workspace people should open first.
4. Open Location to configure the project coordinate reference system, exact position, and area.

The default site is used when a supported creation or ingestion operation does not explicitly select a site. Set it deliberately before connecting new data sources. A pipeline can instead name a specific site.

Create and maintain sites

Open Instruments → Sites, choose Create site, and enter a name. On the site detail page, use Overview to manage its identity and default status, Location to set a position or area, and Instruments to review assigned assets.

For example, a single construction project might contain “North excavation” and “South retaining wall” sites. Keep site naming understandable to field teams and use instrument groups for collections that cross those locations.

Changing an instrument’s site affects filtering and site-scoped access. Review access implications before moving instruments between sites.

Positions and areas

SanSignal supports an exact position and an area polygon for projects and sites. An exact position has coordinates and a coordinate reference system; an area describes a footprint. They serve different purposes and can both be useful.

For geographic coordinates, longitude is the X coordinate and latitude is Y. For projected survey coordinates, use the matching CRS and its coordinate units. Do not paste easting and northing into a longitude and latitude system.

Use the map editor to inspect the result. A misplaced or invisible asset often indicates missing coordinates, swapped axes, or an incorrect CRS. See Explore and maps.

Retiring a location

Read the dependency and reassignment information shown by a site’s administration action. A site with assigned resources or default status may require changes before it can be removed. For project retirement and historical access, see Archiving and lifecycle.
